Who's actually buying a cold plunge here, and why
Search results for this topic skew heavily toward Bali, but the buyers are local: gyms on Jalan Sudirman and Jalan Soekarno-Hatta adding a paid recovery service, physio clinics in Sukajadi and Payung Sekaki treating athletes and knee injuries, running groups off the stadium track, and Panam households with someone who comes home from a plantation site overheated and stiff.
This city sits at 30–34 °C most of the day, so two or three minutes in 8–12 °C water is the quickest way to pull core temperature back down after exertion. Between sessions the tub stays insulated and lidded, the chiller sits in shade with air free to move around it, and on Duri-area estates running their own generator we build in a soft start so the compressor's kick-in does not sag the voltage.
Tub, filtration, drainage and the running cost
The shell itself is larch or thermowood over a stainless frame, lined so the timber never touches the water. Filtration runs everything through ozone or UV treatment, which stretches the change interval to every few weeks instead of daily — a gym tub gets a larger filter and a tighter schedule than a home one. The floor beneath is laid to fall toward a drain, and the dump valve sits wherever you can actually reach it.
Electrically this is one of the lighter builds we do: the ½–1 HP chiller pulls under a kilowatt while running, on a breaker and ELCB kept separate from any sauna heater. Our supply is borehole water, not PDAM — does that change the build?
It changes the chiller allowance more than the tub itself. Borehole water here typically arrives warmer and slightly mineral-heavy, so we size the pump and filtration a step up and set a shorter descaling interval than we would on treated town water. The tub, liner and drain stay identical either way.
How do you size the chiller for a Pekanbaru afternoon?
From three numbers: tub volume, how hot the room around it gets, and how many people use it back to back. A shaded terrace tub sitting in 30 °C afternoon air needs more chiller than the same tub indoors with air conditioning — which is why the same design can call for anywhere between ½ and 1 HP.
